"Women Should Pay More For Health Insurance Because They Have Breasts and Ovaries."

Go Topless Day was August 26th but it seems like women might require even more activism stemming from another challenge that comes from the differences in the way male and female bodies are viewed.

In an argument for why women should pay more for health insurance than men, Dr.David Samadi said, "We only have the prostate. Women have the breasts, the ovaries, the uterus, they get checked in every part."

This man is proposing that women, who are already paid less and have less job opportunities than men, spend even more of the money that they do make on insurance simply because they have different body parts than men do. This is a good example of how oppression involves othering, discrimination and is systematic. This also supports why Go Topless Day is important activism.

  1. I just watch the news report that went along with the article, and I have no words to express my anger. I didn't want to keep watching because of how irritating it was to see two men chatter back and forth about how unfair EQUALITY is!!! Wait what?! I kept thinking, 'I mustn't be hearing this correctly. These men are obviously joking!' I work this female and male patients at a unit in St. Louis. The coverage that is issued to men and women is not equal at all. Most of the time the women have to start paying out of pocket because they are deemed 'normal' again. To insurance companies this just means gaining 30 pounds or losing 30 pounds. For the men on the ward that is entirely different. Their 'normality' doesn't just deal with weight. Instead, things like muscle mass are taken into account. Why would anyone not want to take away this inequality? Shouldn't men and women be allowed to enter into the healthcare system without worrying if their insurance companies are going to other them?

  2. I read the same article! I didn't actually see the video, so maybe someone can enlighten me as to how this played out- the article I read made it sound like Samadi basically pet Gretchen Carlson (the only female voice present) on the head and told her to quiet down when she took an opposing stance.

While the notion of this is preposterous as it is, my favorite part of this argument is that he doesn't supplement his point with any mention of the various other inequalities that still exist. There seems to be a fairly large problem here when women are getting paid less over a lifetime, paying more to stay healthy (with his proposal), statistically living longer, and if I recall correctly, receiving less from social security. That leaves quite a few poor elderly people if my calculations are correct.

On the bright side, it looks like medical schools are now teaching doctors to count reproductive organs.
