Gender norms SUCK

 http://www.buzzfeed.com/video/bobbymiller/things-girls-do-thatd-be-creepy-if-a-guy-did-them

So I was surfing Buzzfeed, and thought after today's discussion on some male roles in society this would be a good video to watch. Some of them are a little bit silly, but the main point of this video to me was how sad it is that men would be looked at strangely for doing these things. Most importantly, I think that if men asked a friend to go to the bathroom with them, or surprised their friend with a piggy-back ride they would be labeled as a homo. In another class we are talking about machismo culture, and how that slowly destroys men. Women can be more masculine than men can be feminine, and I think this blocks men off from many family/societal/sexual relations. How did everyone respond to this video? Did it just seem stupid, or could it be used for change?

  1. I liked this video! I thought it was a good use of education through humor, as we have discussed in class. I do think that what you mentioned is sad- and I often think that the only time men are allowed to be feminine is for the sake of comedy (see below).

  2. Hannah said exactly what I wanted to say! I personally love activism that puts a humorous twist on a serious issue because I think it makes everyone calm the fuck down that is really passionate about a certain side of the topic if that makes sense. Especially to men since I'm using a stereotype that men would rather like to watch a funny video than a serious video. I feel like it would make them feel less lectured at and more informed in a funny manner! Yeah, they may joke about it, but I feel like the lecture would stick more. Hell, it would work better for me!

This just reminds me of the "no homo" craze that we started talking about in class. I feel like that phrase really screwed up the attempted movement of men becoming more comfortable with their femininity. I mean, when will we arrive at the point where a guy can say to another guy that they're "good-looking" or they're "wearing an awesome outfit" without tacking on "no homo" at the end of it?

Anyways, I really did like the video. I hope it would get us to the point where ALL guys can say to one another "you look nice" without tacking on some ignorant phrase to the end of it.
